Privacy Policy
How OctropsCode handles your data. The short answer: it doesn't.
Overview
OctropsCode is a serverless, open-source VS Code extension. It has no backend server, no database, no user accounts, and no analytics infrastructure. This privacy policy explains what data OctropsCode interacts with and how that data is handled.
Data Collection
OctropsCode does not collect, store, transmit, or process any personal data. There is no OctropsCode server that receives information from your editor. The extension operates entirely on your local machine.
Specifically, OctropsCode does not collect:
- Personal information (name, email, location, IP address)
- Usage analytics, telemetry, or tracking events
- Crash reports or error logs
- Your source code or local project files
- Your conversation history with AI models
- Your API keys or credentials
Local Storage & Workspace Indexing
To power agentic features such as RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) and project memory in v1.2.1 and v1.2.2, OctropsCode creates local workspace indexes (e.g. .octrops/project_memory.json) and reads local workspace rules (e.g. .octrops/rules.md).
All workspace indexing, AST parsing, project memory vectors, token optimizations, and side-by-side code diff previews are generated and stored 100% locally on your machine. They are never uploaded to any OctropsCode server or third party.
API Keys & SecretStorage
When you configure OctropsCode with an API key from an AI provider (such as
Google Gemini, OpenAI, Claude, DeepSeek, or any of the 17+ supported providers), that key is stored securely using VS Code's encrypted SecretStorage API on your local device.
API keys are never transmitted to any OctropsCode-owned server or third party. They are used exclusively to authenticate requests sent directly from your editor to the AI provider's API endpoint that you explicitly selected.
Code Context & Autonomous Tool Execution
When using OctropsCode (chat, context menu, or autonomous ReAct agents), the extension interacts with your codebase locally using 15 workspace tools (including file read/write/replace, ripgrep, AST parsing, and terminal execution).
Prompt payloads sent to your selected AI provider include only the context necessary for your prompt (such as targeted file snippets, active file contents, highlighted code, or relevant workspace search results).
You retain full control over what is sent by configuring workspace settings such as
octrops.autoIncludeActiveFile,
octrops.autoIncludeSelection, and tool execution approval settings.
Third-Party AI Providers
When you use OctropsCode, your prompt context is transmitted directly from your editor to the AI provider you select. Each provider operates under their own privacy policy governing API data retention:
- Google (Gemini) Privacy Policy
- OpenAI Privacy Policy
- Anthropic Privacy Policy
- DeepSeek Privacy Policy
- OpenRouter Privacy Policy
OctropsCode has no affiliation with third-party providers and is not responsible for how those services handle API requests according to their individual privacy terms.
